Parthenon

 

 

Atop the Acropolis in Athens, the columns of the Parthenon still dominate the landscape in this ancient city. 

This massive temple dedicated to the goddess Athena became the center of civic activity in the dominant city-state of Athens after its completion in 432 BCE. 

One hundred thousand tons of marble blocks were transformed by ancient sculptors and craftsmen into 46 marble columns 34 feet high. Unfortunately, over the centuries, weather and warfare have taken their toll on the structure. 

Now the Parthenon is undergoing a multi-year restoration to revive its former glory.

 

Taj Mahal

 

 

The Taj Mahal is recognized globally and considered one of the most beautiful things built by man. 

Completed in 1643, the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan had it built as a mausoleum for the tomb of his favourite wife, and later, he too was buried there. 

The entire structure, including the iconic dome, is constructed and carved out of pure white marble. 

The interior and exterior walls embellished with exquisite marble carvings and mosaic marble tiles pave the floors. 

Over the years, the Taj has sustained damages from being exposed to harsh weather conditions and wars. 

Now the Taj has revived its pristine former beauty after a series of restoration efforts.

 

Washington Monument

 

 

Rising above the rest of Washington DC at the end of the Washington Mall, the iconic Washington Monument defines the American capital city more than the White House or Capitol Building. 

This building has been built in two phases before and after the Civil War. The bottom part, built before 1854, is constructed of white marble blocks quarried in nearby Maryland. 

The top half was built with marble from a different Maryland quarry and several other quarries in New England, resulting in a difference in colour between the top and bottom. 

After completion in 1884, it was called the tallest building in the world, standing at 555 feet tall.
